Ep 111 – When is it Time to Hire a Coach
0:00:00.3 S1: Hey guys, and welcome back to the girl means business podcast for another wonderful week of business conversation. Today, we’re talking all about when is it time to hire a business coach? How do you know that it’s the right time to hire somebody to help you grow because it is an investment and it can be a scary investment for your business. So today, I wanna go through some of the signs that you are ready for a coach, I’m also gonna talk about some of the objections that I hear pretty often when talking to potential coaching clients. Before we do that though, I wanna tell you a little bit about my experiences with working with a coach in my business. Now, here’s the thing with working with a coach, when
0:00:44.0 S2: You start building your business, you don’t know what you don’t know.
0:00:48.1 S1: And when I started my photography business… That described me to a T. I had no clue what I was doing, all I knew was that I wanted to take pictures, and I thought this was a way to make extra money and maybe eventually leave my teaching career behind. Did I really believe that was possible? Yes, did I really believe it was possible for me, it depended on the day, but
0:01:11.6 S2: I also was just really excited about the idea of having something to be excited about. And that’s how my business began. And honestly, for the first two years, my business was more of a hobby than a business because I wasn’t running it like a business, I didn’t know how to run it like a business.
0:01:30.6 S1: It wasn’t… In life, started learning about things through online forums and blog posts and YouTube videos and Googling things, that I was able to kind of get a pretty general idea of what I was not doing in my business that needed to be done. I had this idea that if I just built a website, people would find it, if I created a Facebook page, people would come… If I put it out there one time on social media that I was offering photography sessions, people would buy them, and that’s not how the business works, but I didn’t know that.
0:02:02.5 S2: So over the next several years, I spent so much time, so much money on courses and programs and free downloads and joining email list and signing up for different forums, trying to piece together the sort of Frankenstein version of my business, taking what everybody else was saying that they had done and implementing it as best I could on my own, and what I noticed was that while my business did start to grow and it started to look more like a business, it still had all these holes in it, and I still felt like there was missing pieces, and I still felt like I had no clue what I was doing. And I was in this sort of phase of like, Okay, I’m standing in the middle of this divide and there’s all these different paths around me, and people keep telling me, Come this way, do it like this, this is how it should look. And I had no clue which way to turn or who to follow, because I had so many different voices telling me different things, all these different platforms, whether it was people on the forums, I was in… The Google searches, I was doing the websites, I was coming across the blog post that I was reading, the
0:03:14.2 S1: Conference as I was going to, all these different voices were becoming this jumble, the cluttered mess in my head, and it almost made me more confused than I was to begin with, because while I now realized that there was a better way than how I’ve been doing it.
0:03:32.9 S2: I was seeing 25 different better ways, and I didn’t know which one was the better way for me, or which pieces of each one to take and put together, and when you’re working full-time and you’re trying to build a business, this can be a very frustrating phase because you want so badly to grow your business, but you don’t have the time, you don’t have the energy, and sometimes you don’t have the money, and so investing in all these different courses and conferences and platforms that I was signing up for was starting to really add up, and on top of that, the amount of time that I was spending… So every free moment I had during my school day, I was searching for things online and reading articles and asking questions, and then I’d come home in the evening and I would be taking care of my family while still in the back of my mind trying to kind of piece together all the information and wanting so desperately to sit back down in my computer and keep digging, and it became exhausting, and I feel like this is where some of you listening to this might be in your business right now, so if you’re listening to this and you’re nodding along with all the things I’m saying, all the things I was feeling, then keep listening because this is an episode that was created specifically with you in mind because I’ve been there and I know that feeling so well, and just talking about…
0:04:59.5 S2: It takes me to those days when I remember wanting so badly further just to be somebody to come along and say, This is what you need to do, this is the road map you need to follow, but I didn’t know how to find that. And so it wasn’t until I was about five years into my business that I decided I needed to find that somebody, and I needed to pay them to help me.
0:05:24.3 S1: Now, even though my business was a photography business, I didn’t necessarily want to find a photography mentor or a photography coach, I wanted to find somebody who understood just basic business skills, that didn’t matter what nature industry you were in. I just wanted to learn how to grow my business no matter what my business was, what my niche was, and one of my deciding factors for that was that I had already been to a lot of photography-related conferences and events and workshops and trainings and courses and all those things, and I felt like I had a pretty good idea of how other photographers were marketing their business and how other photographers were growing their business, and those things were not working for me the way I wanted them to… I just did not feel that they were the connecting piece I needed, so I specifically looked for somebody who really understood business as opposed to somebody who understood the photography business, if that makes sense. So I found a coach and I spent some time searching for this person, I looked through tons and tons of profiles and I read reviews, and I asked people in different Facebook groups who they recommended, and I researched those people until I found one that I felt like I was a good fit for me, and I hired this coach.
0:06:43.9 S1: And to say that it was a game changer as an understatement, because there was so much more that I had learned from her than just basic business skills, I learned about confident and mindset. And she was able to take my business and where I was in my business, both mentally, physically, all the things and helped me work through that to get to where I was able to grow my business, so hiring a business coach, somebody that could do that for me on a personal basis and hold me accountable and be there for me was such an amazing experience. I wish I had done it sooner. And that is a huge part of why I now do this for other women, what working with her did for me is so far beyond just numbers on a spreadsheet or bookings on a calendar, it was this intangible piece that you don’t get… When you buy a course, you don’t get… When you go to a workshop with 500 other people, you don’t get when you are just downloading a free PDF, there is something that is unique about working one-on-one or small group with a coach who will personally guide you from where you are to where you need to be…
0:08:07.7 S1: And
0:08:07.8 S2: So for that reason, I get really, really passionate about this topic because it is what I feel like I’m called to do, it’s the perfect blend of me getting to take my teaching background and helping people in that capacity, mixed with my experience of growing my photography business and now I get to combine those things and help other women like you have that same excitement for their business, have that same feeling of I am capable of doing this and I am going to kick ass doing it, and
0:08:38.6 S1: So I do get a little excited I do get a little route of about it, but that’s why I love what I do, I’m passionate about it, and… Yeah, I love it. Okay, so let’s dive into the signs, what are the signs that you are ready to hire a coach, because I will say if I could go back to baby business me and tell myself something, it would be, don’t wait five years to do this… Don’t last five years of your time before you jump in…
0:09:08.5 S2: Okay, so here is sign number one you are feeling overwhelmed, and they put this as number one because it literally is the number one reason, the number one sign that it’s time for you to hire somebody, because overwhelm and frustration are no place to be stuck at in your business for too long. If
0:09:29.0 S1: You’ve been feeling overwhelmed, if you’ve been feeling frustrated, if you’ve been feeling burned out in your business for a long period of time, that’s a sign that something has to change, and if you know this is the business for you, if you know that this is something you are passionate about and you are dedicated to building, then you need to hire somebody to help you move through that phase, as you heard me say earlier in my story, I spent way too much time in that frustrated phase, and I cannot tell you how many times I would end my day in tears because I would be doing everything I knew how to do. And nothing was working.
0:10:13.1 S2: I felt like I was being pulled in 50 million different directions because I was also trying to do all the things in my business.
0:10:21.4 S1: I was doing all the things I was hearing people talk about whether they really were gonna help me or not, I didn’t know.
0:10:27.2 S2: I was just throwing darts at a wall and hoping something stuck, and that feeling of just throwing blindly out into the world and hoping something sticks or catches is no way to run a business. At the same time, if you are feeling overwhelmed because you are a one-man show, which a lot of entrepreneurs are especially earlier in their business, if you’re a one-man show and you’re trying to take on all of these different things that you are hearing people say, you need to be doing this and you need to be doing that. You need to have this in place and you have that in place, and I’ll admit sometimes even on this show, if you’re binge listening to these episodes, there may be times when you feel a little bit overwhelmed from the experts we have on the show that are saying, This is a way to do this, but if that’s where you’re at, that is a perfect sign that you need somebody that is gonna sit you down and say, Okay, here is the places you can remove some of the clutter, here are some of the ways you can… Streamline or automate to get your time back so that it runs without you having to lift a finger.
0:11:36.4 S2: Here’s the places you need to be focusing on. Someone that’s gonna come along and give you that road map and help you to see things that you may not even see in your own business. So if you are feeling overwhelmed, if you are starting to even question like, Can I do this and still have my sanity intact, that is the number one sign that it’s time to hire a business coach.
0:12:02.8 S1: Okay, so Sin number two is that you lack accountability, so accountability is a really key piece because we have to be self-disciplined if you are working for yourself, if you’re working from home and you kind of have this relaxed environment around you of, Oh, I can do that later… Oh well, I’ll work on that later. I’ve got laundry to do, and I’ve got dishes to do, and I’ve got my kids to take care of, and I’ll get to my work stuff when I get to my work stuff, if you are in that phase of, I need somebody to help me. Hold me accountable to making sure I do these things in my business, then a coach is a perfect fit for you. When I first started working with my coach, one of the first things she had me do was a time audit.
0:12:49.0 S2: So for several days, she had me sit down and really keep track of what am I doing throughout my day, What am I spending my time on? Is it, I’m on Facebook, Okay, well, what am I doing on Facebook? And, is it really productive? Am I checking email? Am I working on editing photos? Am I sending out invoices? What am I spending my time on? And when I send that to her and I was completely honest, the first thing she came back and said to me was, she said, Kendra, if you want this to be a full-time business, you have to treat it like a full-time business, and
0:13:25.8 S1: Right now you’re treating it like a part-time business at best, like she went back and she went through my time sheet that I had, and she said, Look, you spend an hour on social media, did you actually post anything, did you comment? Did you engage, did you interact or were you just scrolling for the sake of scrolling, and it was that sort of slap in the face that I needed… I needed somebody to come along, somebody that I respected, somebody that I trusted to say, This is the area your weakest in, let me help hold you accountable for this. So after that first week, she had to continue, I’d pick a day or two each week that I would write out what I did that day, and I would send it to her, and it was her way of helping me stay accountable, and it was helping me build habits in my business that have served me really well from there on, but without her there to help hold me accountable, I don’t know that I would have ever done that because I would have thought, Oh, I’m always so busy, I’m doing so many things.
0:14:26.1 S1: But how many of those things are actually moving my business forward, not very many of them were at the time, and I needed her to help point that out to me, it’s like hiring a personal trainer. When you send them, Okay, this is what I had for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. And they look at you, they go, Okay, well, McDonald’s for lunch, and graham crackers for snacks, and those gold fish you adore kids play. They help to keep you in line. It’s the same thing, it’s having a personal trainer, but for your business, someone that’s going to hold you accountable.
0:14:58.6 S2: So that is signed number two, if you need that accountability piece to keep you on track and to make sure you’re building those healthy habits, then it’s time to hire a business coach. Alright.
0:15:08.9 S1: And then sin. Number three is you’re doing all of the work, you’re doing all the things that people are telling you to do, but you’re not getting results. So you have done all the things. Like I said, I did in my business, I had read all the blog posts, I listened to all the YouTube videos these days, it’s all podcast and blog things that Pinterest and clubhouse and Instagram and all the different platforms are just screaming information at you. So how do you filter all that, because if you are anything like I was where I’m saying, Okay, well, this person is telling me that I need to build an email list and do it all these five or six steps that she’s telling me to do, but then I bought this course from here, this person and she’s telling me to build a Facebook group and post to my personal page, and this person is telling me that I need to get on to Clubhouse or Twitter or Instagram, but over here, they’re telling me to write a blog, that’s a lot. And if you’re doing all of those things and you’re saying, Okay, well, I started a blog just like this person told me to do, it’s not working, I started an email list, this person told me to do, it’s not working.
0:16:16.2 S1: I’ve
0:16:16.7 S2: Created a Facebook group like this person told me to do, it’s not working, I’ve done all the things people have told me to do, and it’s still not working.
0:16:25.1 S1: You need somebody that can come along, audit your business, tell you, Here is where you need to focus on, they
0:16:32.1 S2: Can also find your blind spots, I posted about this on Instagram recently.
0:16:37.4 S1: Blind spots in our business, it’s just like a blind spot on our car, there
0:16:41.9 S2: Are things that you don’t see about your business because you’re so deep in it, you can’t see the forest for the trees. And
0:16:50.8 S1: So hiring a coach will come along and they can have the 360 birds-eye view of your business from an outsider’s perspective, and they can say, Okay, here’s the thing, you’re not seeing this… You’re missing this piece of your business when you’ve built a business around something that you’re passionate about, something that is personal to you, you are personally connected to the product and the service that you’ve created, and so it’s really hard for you to disconnect and see it from a really sort of objective, subjective point of view, I don’t know which… Where I goes there, but you get the point, you have a hard time seeing like, Okay, but from a client perspective, this is how it looks, because you’re seeing it from your perspective. So having somebody else that can come in and say, Hey, I know nothing about this business, or
0:17:48.5 S2: I’m not personally connected to this product, and here is where the discounting your product and your client, and those are things that we don’t always see for ourselves, but when you hire a coach to come in and show you those things, it’s not always easy to hear, but it is so needed in order for you to really move forward. I had this exact experience recently, I got a chance to chat with one of my most favorite like coaches, mentors ever, and I was talking to her about the sales final process that I was in the middle of creating and setting up. And
0:18:25.5 S1: I say, Can you just look over… Just super fast. I know you’re busy, but just if you have a second, and immediately, she was able to see where the missing piece was, she was able to go, Oh, you need something in here to help connect them to the next step. And it was like a life. I was like, Well, Dad, Why have I not seen that? Well.
0:18:44.9 S2: I didn’t see it ’cause I’m too close to it. This is why there are proof readers in the world, because when you have written something and you’ve re-read it so many times, you no longer see those spelling errors because you know what the end result should look like. But when you hand it off to somebody else and they go, That doesn’t make sense, or, you’ve misspelled this, or, This doesn’t really sound right. It doesn’t flow very well.
0:19:08.1 S1: That’s why having an outside source… Every industry has this, is that checks and balances. And for us, it’s hiring a business coach, alright, so those are the three signs at its time for you to hire a business coach. The next thing I wanna get into are some of the common objections I hear, but before I do that, I do wanna tell you about something really exciting that if you’re listening to this episode, you’re thinking, Okay, Kendra, I hear you. You’re speaking directly to me, then I’ve created something just for you, I’ve just launched the first round of the GMB Academy, this is a six-week small group coaching program where you’ll get to work directly with me for six weeks to help grow your business. This is limited to a very small group of women that I can make sure every single one of you are getting personal attention, you will get weekly Zoom calls, weekly assignments and kind of task to work on within your business each week. You’re going to have a Facebook group where we can all connect together, you’ll have box or access to me for two months, so any time you’re working on something and you have a question, you can just send me a message or a voice memo and I will get back to you right away, specifically answering your questions, carrying on that conversation, you will also get two one-on-one check-in calls with me, these can be done either before we start and then again after, or at any point within the six weeks that you wanna have a little bit more one-on-one conversation with me.
0:20:39.6 S1: Now, this is typically the part where people would say, and you’re gonna learn how to do X, Y, Z in this group program, I
0:20:46.1 S2: Don’t promise to teach you any specific skill because before we start the Academy, I’m going to get to know every single one of your businesses that joins, I’m going to know exactly what your needs are, I’m going to learn exactly where you are in your business, and I will use that to custom build our Academy together.
0:21:06.4 S1: So while I consider and say, you’re gonna learn how to post on Instagram and you’re gonna learn how to grow your business through email marketing, that’s all good and great, and those things maybe be included in the academy, but I will custom design each session to fit the needs of the members of that session, so this is not a one-size-fits-all, it’s not like I have created a course outline that we’re gonna go through it point by point, each week we will tweak things and customize things based on what your needs are, so
0:21:37.7 S2: This is gonna be a very personalized program for the members that are in it.
0:21:43.5 S1: So if you’re interested in learning more, it is through application process, so you will go to the link down in the show notes, you can also go to Gramin business dot com academy, and you can find all of the information you need there, as well as the link to apply. Alright, so let’s go ahead and get back to our conversation and talk about some of the objections, some of the things I hear people say for why they can’t hire a coach right now.
0:22:10.6 S2: And we’re just gonna dive right into the big one. The number one reason is cost. And let me say, I completely understand this, I get it. If you’re not making a lot of mine your business, it’s really scary and difficult to spend a lot of money on your business, and you hear we’ll tell the time you have to spend money to make money, which is sort of true, but at the same time, you also wanna make sure you’re gonna get a good return on your investment.
0:22:36.1 S1: And I very rarely hear from people that they invested in hiring a coach and did not get a return on their investment.
0:22:43.2 S2: Now, I have heard will say, Oh, I bought this course and it didn’t really help me, or I went to this workshop and it wasn’t really that great, or, I bought this program. And it was so so, but when someone is paying you to work with them one-on-one or small group to personally grow your business, that is the greatest chance of getting a return on your investment.
0:23:03.3 S1: Because you’re not just trying to fit yourself into a one-size fits all program or course, you are getting personalized help and when any time you can get personalized help, you’re going to grow your business and you’re going to see a return on your investment. I also like to think about all that time in my business that I spent trying to freakin in things together. Trying to piece things together.
0:23:27.8 S2: I think about how much time I wasted, and I think about how much money I wasted. If I went back and I added up all the money I spent on trying to find a fix for my business that did not work, I probably could have paid for my coach three or four fold, and had I known what I know now, I would have told myself, going back in time it, I said, hire a coach, sooner, hire somebody as soon as you can, your business to help you because they are going to help you avoid some of the failure, they’re going to help you avoid some of the road blocks because you are now, getting one-on-one help from somebody who has failed and gotten back up and learned how to succeed.
0:24:12.6 S1: That
0:24:12.8 S2: Is what you’re paying a coach for, you’re paying a coach to show you… This is what could happen. I’m gonna show you how to make sure it doesn’t happen. You’re paying for someone to give you a shortcut.
0:24:26.7 S1: Imagine that you are dropped off in the middle of a brand new city and you’re trying to find a specific location, you have no map, no GPS, you are just driving around, hoping you’re going in the right direction, turning left and hoping it takes you there and then turning right and hoping it gets you closer. That’s what building a business is like on your own, when
0:24:47.9 S2: You hire a coach, you now have access to a map, to a GPS guidance system that is going to tell you Turn right at the next corner, go two miles and then turn left. That business coach is going to help you guide you in the right direction so that you don’t have to drive in circles hoping you get to the right spot, so that’s the analogy that I’ve always had in my head that has made it worthwhile, we pay to have these services, these GPS guidance systems to tell us where to go, and in your business, you’re paying for that coach to be that guidance. The second objection I hear often is about time. I hear people say a lot, Well, I don’t have time right now, I’ve got too many things going on. Or I’m working a nine to five job and I’m building my business and I don’t have time to meet with a coach once a week or twice a week, or to do these Zoom calls or to do the homework assignments. And when I hear somebody say they don’t have the time, my first reaction is there’s something else that they are not telling me, because just like telling your personal trainer…
0:25:55.3 S2: I don’t have time to go to the gym. We all know that we can make the time. If we really wanted to see the results, if I really wanna get in shape, I will find the time to go to the gym for an hour.
0:26:08.2 S1: I will find the time to eat a healthy meal.
0:26:11.2 S2: So if you want to grow your business, you will find the time to work with a coach to do the work that’s required to grow your business, so if you’re thinking to yourself, I don’t have the time, I want you to really ask yourself the question, if I had the time, would I do it? And if there’s something else that’s blocking you.
0:26:35.9 S1: If you’re using the time piece as an excuse to not verbally say, I can’t afford this, or to not verbally say, I’m afraid of this, this is what we’ll get to in a second. Then I don’t believe that time is a real restriction, and I know there are some of you out there who are probably yelling at me through your speakers and saying, But no, I really don’t have time. And I hear you, I do, but at the same time, I do think that that in itself is a reason to need to hire a coach, because if you don’t have time, because your business is overwhelming you
0:27:13.9 S2: Because you’re trying to do all the things and not successfully doing them, then a coach is going to help you find places where you can get time back, if you are feeling like you are drowning in tasks that you’re working a 90 to five and you’re coming home every night to a family and responsibilities, and then a business on top of that, and it’s too much, then you need somebody to come in and help you figure out how you can streamline your process so that you are able to come home at night and know that your business is running successfully while you’re spending time with your family, so if time is something that is important to you, if time is something you want more of, this could be the way to do it, I also go back to the idea of my analogy of working out, if I wanted to get healthier, if I wanted to focus on being physically fit. I would make time, I would have to make time.
0:28:13.1 S1: I would find 30 minutes an hour, 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there to do something, and I want you to know that all of these things that I’m saying to you are things that I have experienced, they’re personal, stories, their personal experiences, because I still do this. My husband will come home at the end of the day and say What’s for dinner.
0:28:33.1 S2: And I’d be like, I just didn’t have time to fix my thing or I didn’t have time to prepare. Well, really, that’s not true. I did, I just chose not to. I chose to do other things in place of meal planning for that… That night or that week.
0:28:47.0 S1: So in my personal opinion, when someone says, I just don’t have the time for this right now, what they’re really saying is, I am choosing not to prioritize this in my business or my life right now, so if that is the excuse that you have, if you’re saying you know, yeah, I could probably pay for this and… Yeah, I wanna do this. I that have the time. I really want you to dig deeper and think, Okay, no, but if I do have the time, would I come up with another excuse, which leads us perfectly into the third objection, and this is a sneaky one, because it’s not one that people will necessarily say they are objecting to or they’re afraid of… And that is the fear. There is an underlying fear around hiring a coach, fear that you’re not going to do anything out of it, fear that you’re gonna realize that you’re just not successful at this or good at this, fear that somebody is going to point out the things that you have not been doing well, or a fear that by admitting that you need someone to help you, you’re saying that you can’t do this, you can’t do this on your own, and the reality is, you can’t do this on your own, if you ask any successful business owner, 100% of them are gonna tell you that they at some point have worked with a coach, I guarantee you, I
0:30:09.5 S2: Would pay you money to find me somebody who is crazy successful in their business and has not worked with a business coach. You won’t find it. And most of the people will tell you they still hire coaches, they are still part of masterminds, they’re still learning because nobody can do this by themselves. Period, exclamation mark, end of story, you cannot do this by yourself, and so all those fears around, I don’t wanna hire a coach because I’m afraid they’re gonna tell me something I don’t wanna do, or I’m afraid they’re gonna point out things I’ve done wrong, that’s kind of the point is, you want them to tell you, Hey, you’ve been doing it this way and you’re doing it the hard way, let me show you an easier way.
0:30:55.3 S1: Or, Hey, you’re about to go down the path where you’re gonna spend a lot of time and money on something that’s not really gonna get you the results, let me steer you off in this other direction where I think you’re gonna be a lot happier with the results that you get, so if you have these underlying fears around, Am I going to get anything out of this is it gonna be worth my investment, Am I going to be shamed for what… How I’ve been running my business, and I can be embarrassed by the things that I’ve done that haven’t worked with the failures that I’ve had, put all of that aside, because when you go into a coaching program, when you go in to work with somebody, the goal is to grow, and in order to grow, you have to put aside your own insecurities and your own fears and allow that person to help you, if
0:31:46.7 S2: You’re not ready to put those things aside and welcome growth into your business, then you’re not ready to grow your business.
0:31:54.6 S1: So you have to be okay with saying, Hey, this is the messy parts of myself and my business, help me unless I… Them, help me organize them and make them into systems and processes and programs that are going to move my business forward, help me grow my business.
