MORE ABOUT ME
Struggling to grow your business during nap times, school lines, seeking balance? Been there, ready to guide you from survival to success!
Alright friend, let’s talk about the phrase that makes photographers clutch their camera straps and whisper “not today, Satan”:
“We can’t pay you, but It will be great exposure!”
Listen…I get it. Exposure has become the Voldemort of photography business terms.
But before we ban the word entirely, let’s get brutally honest for a sec:
All marketing – literally ALL of it – is just a way of getting exposure.
Every single thing we do to get clients is tied to the same goal:
Get seen → Get remembered → Get booked.
So when photographers say,
“I need more clients!”
or
“No one is seeing my posts!”
…what they’re really saying is:
“I need more exposure.”
And yet, the second someone suggests working for exposure, we turn into a human siren: NOPE! ABSOLUTELY NOT! TRY AGAIN!
So, what gives?
It’s not that exposure is bad.
It’s that BAD exposure opportunities have traumatized us.
But strategic exposure?
That’s literally what marketing IS.
Let’s talk about how to tell the difference.
Before you jump into anything — free, paid, or “exposure” based — ask yourself these questions:
Not randos. Not “maybe someday” people. Actual book-you clients.
If the answer is “probably not,” then…you already know.
Time, energy, editing bandwidth, mental space — it all counts.
If their last post was in 2021 and they have a cartoon profile pic…you can go ahead and pass.
Portfolio images, testimonials, business relationships, blog content — something with long-term value.
This one is 🔥 crucial.
You need a way to follow up after the session or event:
Exposure without a follow-up path?
That’s just throwing glitter into the wind and hoping it sticks to the right people.
If the benefits are vague, that’s your sign.
Now let’s look at some real-life examples.
DM from a local boutique:
“Can you photograph our new clothing line? We can’t pay, but we’ll tag you!”
Ma’am…a TAG?
A tag???
Let’s unpack:
🚩 Commercial-level work
🚩 Zero compensation
🚩 Audience is not your client base
🚩 They benefit – you don’t
🚩 Tags are not a marketing strategy
This isn’t exposure. This is unpaid labor with a trendy backdrop.
Verdict: No thanks…go enjoy your afternoon instead.
The text we ALL dread:
“Since you’re a photographer…can you do our family pictures? We can’t pay but we’ll tell everyone about you!”
No, they won’t.
They will tell everyone you’re cheap…or free.
And then suddenly you’re booked out with cousin after cousin who “just needs a few quick pics.”
Verdict: A kind no, or a one-time gift if YOU choose, not because they expect it.
Now THIS is exposure that actually makes sense.
A luxury event planner reaches out:
“Our photographer canceled. We can’t do full rate, but we will:
– Introduce you to all 20 women entrepreneurs
– Give you their emails with permission to follow up
– Feature you as the preferred photographer
– Give you time to do branded headshots for each guest”
This is exposure in the correct direction.
Green flags everywhere:
💚 A room full of your ideal clients
💚 Warm intros
💚 Follow-up list (HELLO email marketing)
💚 Portfolio content
💚 Referrals lined up like dominoes
Verdict: A strategic yes.
This type of “free” work pays you back tenfold.
A well-known venue + florist + planner want to do a collaborative styled shoot.
They’re connected.
They’re respected.
They share.
They refer.
They bring visibility you can’t buy.
You walk away with:
Verdict: Yes, yes, yes — if it aligns with your goals.
Exposure is not the enemy.
Random, unaligned, unpaid, energy-sucking exposure opportunities are.
But strategic exposure?
That’s literally the foundation of marketing.
So the real question isn’t:
👉 “Should I work for exposure?”
It’s:
👉 “Is THIS exposure going to help me grow…or drain me dry?”
👉 “Do I have a way to follow up with the people I meet?”
👉 “Is this an investment…or a distraction?”
When you choose exposure intentionally – not reactively – it becomes one of the most powerful marketing tools you have.

I guarantee this thread is about to be a rollercoaster of chaos and comedy. 😅📸
